My name is Haley Herrick and I teach first graders at Walnut Grove Elementary School. I am so excited about the new school year! I look forward to a great year with a new crop of excited first graders! I am very enthusiastic about learning and it is my hope that my love of learning rubs off on your kiddos!
I graduated in 2001 from Mercer University with my Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. I have a Master's degree in Reading and Literacy from Mercer University where I was honored to be named "Most Outstanding Master's of Education Student". This is an amazing honor that I still hold dear. I was chosen by the teaching staff at Mercer and honored at graduation! I also have a Specialist's Degree in Leadership and Administration from NSU. I hold certification in gifted education, as well. I have been teaching for almost 17 years. Five of those years were spent teaching 4th grade and 2nd grade in DeKalb County's Idlewood Elementary. Since then I have been teaching 1st grade at Walnut Grove. In addition to my duties as a first grade teacher, I am also the Teacher Leader at WGES. This means that I help to provide and facilitate professional learning for our staff. I also help to troubleshoot problems with technology, other classroom issues, and maintain our Leveled Library, the WGES website, and WGES facebook page. WGES keeps me busy, but I wouldn't trade it for anything! I LOVE Walton County and especially WGES!!!
During the 2013-14 school year, I was named WGES Teacher of the Year! What an honor! I was so humbled to be chosen by my colleagues and peers. This is such a wonderful award and I will truly treasure it forever!
I have been married to my husband, David, for 14 years. He is a Gwinnett County Firefighter/Lieutenant and works with at Fire Station 13 in Suwanee. We have 1 child, Jackson, who is 7 and in Second Grade here at WGES! Life is interesting around the Herrick household! I enjoy spending time with family, taking pictures, golfing, camping/traveling, as well as gardening in my vegetable/fruit garden where I grow the best tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, bellpeppers, strawberries and blueberries. I enjoy canning and baking and trying out new recipes! I love coffee (Dunkin' Donuts) and raisinets ! I love music and listen to all kinds on my iphone. I live in Walton County so don't be surprised to see me out and about in Loganville or Monroe especially at Wal-Mart! We have just completed the building our dream house and forever home in Social Circle. We love the country life and front porch sitting! Life is simple and uncomplicated and best enjoyed with those who matter most!
I am so excited about this school year! I look forward to working with you and your child. I think that keeping the lines of communication open between home and school help our students see the importance of learning and success. I promise to talk to you like a "real" person and not just give you teacher jargon! I want to thank you in advance for giving me the opportunity to work with your child. I tell parents that I want to be the kind of teacher I want my own child to have. Children are true treasures and I will do my best to treat them as the treasures they are! And it truly is my pleasure to serve our community!
